Ancient Marriage in Sri Lanka

They are three Marriages in Sir Lanka.

  • Deega wivaha ( දීග විවහා)
  • Binna wivaha (බින්න විවාහා)
  • Ekage Kama (එකගේ කෑම)
Deega Wiwaha is about bringing the bride to the groom's house . It is something that still happens traditionally today.

Binna Wiwaha means the groom stays at the bride's house .

Ekage Kama is giving on bride to several brothers.

This system came be seen in many parts of the kingdom of Kandy. This marriage arrangement is done to prevent their property from going out.

This system was banned by the British.

It can be seen in movies and teledrama,

   Example -: Ekage Sokari

              Badde Gedara
